ECEC is focused on identifying how residents are impacted by our local superfund sites. As we learn more, we will post information on this page.
The Himco Dump Site is located at the intersection of County Road 10 and John Weaver Parkway, in Cleveland Township, Elkhart County, Indiana. The Site includes a closed, unlicensed landfill previously operated by Himco Waste Away Services, Inc., a 4-acre construction debris area (CDA), and portions of residential yards which border the CDA. The source contamination at the Site is the landfill, which began operations in 1960. The landfill accepted household refuse, construction rubble, medical waste, and calcium sulfate for disposal. Himco closed the Landfill in 1976 and covered it with approximately one foot of sand overlying a layer of calcium sulfate. The EPA later determined that private wells in this area were impacted by Landfill leachate contamination.
